Introduction to TestNG:
TestNG is a testing framework for the java programming language which is inspired and created based on Junit from java programming language and Nunit from .net programming language. Apart from the features that these two have TestNG have features which have not been covered in JUnit and Nunit. It is created by Cedric Beust.
What is TestNG?
In Simple terms, TestNG is a testing framework which can be used for unit ,integration ,end-to-end and functional testing. It is used by both developers and testers. The NG in TestNG stands for Next Gen.
Features of TestNG:
TestNG supports wide range of features . Below mentioned list of features are considered to be some of the important and impactful features.
- Annotations: It supports different kinds of Annotations. Annotations are basically a form of meta data that can be added to java source code.
- Multi- threading: Test cases can be run in arbitrarily big thread pools with various configurations such as all methods in their own thread, one thread per test class.
- Data Driven Testing: It supports data driven testing by using an annotation know as @DataProvider using which we can parameterize the data which we want to use.
- Support: It works with multiple applications such as Eclipse , IDEA, Maven etc.
Installation of TestNG
Maven or Gradle are the build tools used in a java based project these also act as dependency management tools. In order to add Test NG to this project we can directly download the jar file and add it as a library or we can add them using the below code
Using Maven :
org.testng
testng
7.7.1
test
Using Gradle:
// https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.testng/testng
testImplementation group: 'org.testng', name: 'testng', version: '7.7.1'

How to Create and Run a TestNG Test:
To create a TestNG file the following steps can be followed :
- Create a Java Project using a IDE such as IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse.
- Add the TestNG dependency to the project following the steps explained previously.
- Create a class file and add the test methods. In order treat these methods as TestNG methods add @Test annotation.
- Apart from @Test various annotations such as @BeforeSuite ,@BeforeClass, @AfterTest, @AfterMethod etc.
- Create a TestNG XML file which specifies the flow or order in which tests needs to be executed.
- Run the TestNG XML file using command line or using TestNG plugin in the IDE, or by using maven or gradle.
Advantages of TestNG:
The TestNG framework offers several advantages, including:
- Flexible test configuration: TestNG allows testers to configure and organize their tests easily, which helps to streamline the testing process and save time.
- Support for a variety of test types: TestNG supports a broad range of test types, including unit, functional, integration, and end-to-end tests, which makes it a versatile framework for testing applications of various types and sizes.
- Advanced annotations: TestNG provides advanced annotation features that enable testers to define the dependencies and sequencing of test methods, as well as to group and prioritize tests based on different criteria.
- Parallel test execution: TestNG supports parallel test execution, which means that multiple tests can be run simultaneously on different threads, thereby improving the speed and efficiency of the testing process.
- Reporting and logging: TestNG generates detailed test reports and logs, which provide testers with valuable insights into the results of their tests and help them identify issues and bugs more quickly and accurately.
- Integration with other tools: TestNG integrates with a variety of other testing tools and frameworks, such as Selenium and JUnit, which makes it a popular choice for many testers and developers.
