Applitools charges per checkpoint. Scale up, and costs balloon fast.

TestMu’s ecosystem requires vendor commitment. Your tests live in their cloud.

The pattern is identical:

1. Promise AI magic ✨
2. Lock you into proprietary formats πŸ”’
3. Charge enterprise prices πŸ’°
4. Make migration painful 😀

What teams actually need:

  • AI that writes tests from requirements

  • Self-healing when UI changes

  • Open formats that won’t trap them

  • Costs that scale with their budget, not against it


Playwright’s new Test Agents, combined with OpenCode, deliver exactly this.


3. The Framework: Planner β†’ Generator β†’ Healer

Playwright 1.56 (released 2026) introduced something most QA teams haven’t discovered yet: Playwright Test Agents.

🎭 Healer β€” Watches your test runs. When tests fail, it replays the failing steps, inspects the current UI, and patches the test β€” locator updates, wait adjustments, data fixes. Then re-runs until green (or gives up gracefully).

Let’s make this concrete. Here’s exactly how I set this up for my client.

Step 1: Initialize Agent Definitions

In your Playwright project

npx playwright init-agents --loop=opencode

This generates agent definition files under .github/ containing:

  • Specialized instructions for each agent

  • MCP tool configurations

  • Prompt templates optimized for testing workflows


Regenerate these whenever you update Playwright. New versions include improved tools and instructions.

When your CI fails:

Using the healer agent, fix the failing test

1. Runs the failing test
2. Identifies the failure point (stale locator, timing issue, missing element)
3. Inspects current UI state
4. Proposes a fix
5. Re-runs to verify
6. Either commits the fix or skips the test with explanation

Real example: A button changed from “Continue” to “Next Step”. Healer updated the locator in 8 seconds. No human intervention.

Back to my client’s story.

Their setup:

LLM costs: Free tools, yes. But you’re paying for LLM API calls. Heavy usage with Claude Opus can run $100-300/month. (Still cheaper than $47K/year.)

No vendor support: You’re relying on open-source communities. Fast-moving, responsive communities β€” but no SLA.
